Amelia
The city presents itself to visitors with a very scenographic aspect: its urbanistic structure traces the hill on which it leans against and closes from the bottom upwards in a cone shape, with its cathedral and tall, dodecahedral (XI century) tower at the top.
Amelia preserves ancient vestiges, such as the polygonal walls: a legend says were built by Cyclopes. In reality, they date back more than 2500 years and are formed by square blocks wedged together without mortar, like an enormous puzzle: they are 700 metres long, 8 metres high and three and a half metres deep. Findings from the Pre-Roman Umbrian period are mixed with Roman ones in the Archeological museum, where the real attraction, however, is the great bronze statue of Germanico: majestic and of a great beauty, over 2 metres tall, it reproduces in bronze Nerone Claudio Druso, called, in fact, Germanico.
Other testimonies of the most ancient times can be found in the underground of the city, where it is possible to visit 10 magnificent rooms realized for the water supply in Roman times, with a holding capacity of almost 4500 cubic metres. Among the principal buildings in Amelia, the Cathedral, rebuilt starting from the XVII century, contains the tombs of Bartholomeo and Baldo Farrattini (Ippolito Scalza, 1574) and the funeral monument of Giovanni Geraldini (1476) of the Agostino di Duccio School. One of the chapels holds a curiosity: the banners captured by the Turks during the battle of Lepanto are still on show. The church of Saint Francis contains frescos of the Giotto school and the funeral monuments of the Geraldini family.
Among the many aristocratic buildings within the city walls, Palazzo Petrignani (XVI century) whose walls are frescoed with allegories of the seasons and zodiac signs, and Palazzo Forattini, stand out.
An authentic jewel in Amelia is then the Social Theatre, built in 1782 and modelled on the Fenice “Phoenix” in Venice. The siege of Federico Barbarossa in Amelia is portrayed on the curtain.
