Narni
The historical centre of the upper part of the city (reachable today from the car park near Porta Ternana by means of a modern and suggestive system of escalators and lifts), has conserved its medieval aspect and charm almost intact.
The three neighbourhoods of Narni (the Umbrian Nequinum and then the Roman Narnia) are Mezule, Fraporta e Santa Maria. Every year they compete against each other in the Ring Contest (Corsa allAnello) in May. Divided in such a fashion, the city stretches along the rocky ridge dominated by the majestic fortress, with its compact bulk, solid, but elegant. It was built between 1360 and 1370 on request of Cardinal Egidio dAlbornoz, Pope Urbano IVs vicar, and for centuries was the symbol of the Pontificial dominion over these lands. The Municipal of Narni and the Province of Terni purchased it in 1984 and have performed impressive restoration works that have restored it to its ancient splendour and made it usable, creating exhibition and congress areas on the inside.
The other outstanding testimony of the past that characterizes Narnis own panorama, is the Augustan Bridge (Ponte dAugusto), which together with the Formina Aqueduct, are traces of the splendour of Roman Narni.
But it is Medieval Narni which offers visitors the most fascinating atmospheres, with its squares, its alleys, towers, buildings and churches.
Piazza dei Priori, in particular, is one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Italy: the municipal building (whose Council Hall contains a splendid altar-piece with the Incoronazione della Vergine (Virgins Coronation by the Ghirlandaio), looks down on it, and the Loggia dei Priori with Banditores communal assembly.
At the end of the square there is a 13th century fountain in which the Formina Aqueduct merged.
Nearby other treasures of medieval architecture: the church of Santa Maria Impensole , the church of Saint Francis. And then the cathedral dedicated to San Giovenale (Saint Juvenal), patron of the city, with San Cassio Sacello, on the primitive 6th century church.
Fascination and mystery also when you visit underground Narni: the course begins under the ex church of Saint Dominic, where a rupestrian church and the ancient Inquisition Tribunal can be found.
Palazzo Eroli, with an architecture deriving from an 18th century restoration of previous buildings is also of notable interest. Purchased by the Province of Terni in the early 80s, it has been renovated and destined to host the Museum of the City of Narni, including materials which date from its origins to the XVth century (Library, Historical Archives, Archeology Collection and Painting Collection).

Calvi
Among the peculiarities of Calvi (19 km from Narni towards Rome) the double churches of SantAntonio and santa Brigida with one front realized by B. Fuga, which joins them together. Inside the church of Saint Anthony there is a monumental Nativity crib with 30 terracotta statues dating back to the middle of the 16th century, in the other a real jewel of Baroque architecture, a precious wooden choir stall.
It is precisely the cribs that characterize the village, thanks to a singular initiative in the 80s with which the artist Valan called upon artists from around the world to paint the walls of the houses with Nativity themes. Over 50 works can be seen.
The church of Saint Francis and the convent were built on behalf of the saint of Assisi who was passing through the city in 1213, on land donated by Saint Berardo of Calvi. The building was later improved with frescos and supplied with a beautiful cloister.

Otricoli
The village of Otricoli (16 km from Narni towards Rome) at the top of the vast Ocriculum archeological area, is surrounded by walled parts dating back to primitive pre-Romanic settlements, in Opera quadrata, squared works from tuff blocks. The walls were partly transformed and raised in medieval times. Along the perimeter Porta Maggiore and San Severino are opened.
In the Municipal Hall, there is an antiquarium which holds all the materials which come from the archeological area, with its copy of the famous Giove di Otricoli (Otricoli Jupiter), the original of which can be found in the Vatican Museums.
Inside the village, the Collegiate of Saint Mary of the Assumption with a neo-classical front leaning against the late-medieval structure. Inside there are numerous findings of Ocriculum from Roman times and paintings, among which Il Martirio di San Vittore (Saint Victors Martyrdom).
The castle of Poggio can be visited near Otricoli; it is a characteristic fortified village with 7 towers, immersed in the countryside on the slopes of Mount Saint Pancrazio.
