Valnerina (Nera valley)

Valnerina

Among woods and ancient stone villages.

A crystal clear river that flows through a lush green valley. On the slopes of mountains, whose peaks are covered in snow in winter, and on the hills which dominate the course of the Nera, small and elegant medieval villages with their stone towers keep watch. This is the extroardinary age-old scene along the last stretch of the Nera Valley; the stretch which, immediately after the village of Scheggino, enters the territory of the Province of Terni, to then widen, after receiving the Velino waters from the celebrated Marmore Waterfalls, into the wide and charming landscape of the Terni basin. Ferentillo is the kingdom of free-climbing. Arrone is the starting point for descents in a canoe or raft. Casteldilago, Montefranco, the Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle (Abbey of Saint Peter in the Valley) are other such pearls to discover one by one, perhaps even savouring, during the breaks, the characterisitc local food, with its typical salamis, cheeses, truffles, trout, crayfish and bread baked in a wood-fired oven.
