April May
Corsa allAnello (The Ring Contest) Narni
This is the historical re-enacting of a medieval tournament re-introduced in accordance with the rules established in 1371 and in use until the 19th century. It was re-introduced in 1968 and is linked to the honours accorded to San Giovenale (St. Juvenal), patron of the city. The tournament is between the knights of the neighbourhoods Fraporta, Mezule and Santa Maria. The competitors face one another in pairs: the winner is he, who racing around the ellipsoid-shaped tournament field, first manages to run his lance through three rings. The race is preceded by the blessing of the large candles in the Cathedral, the reading of a proclamation, by the investiture of the knights and historical procession through the city streets. Held between the last Saturday of April and the second Sunday in May, the manifestation is characterised by flag-waving exhibitions, musical and cultural events, shows and the opening of typical taverns.
