Saint Valentine’s Day and Valentenian Events – Terni
Terni is the home of Saint Valentine, the Patron Saint of lovers. February 14th celebrates the anniversary of the city’s first bishop: the basilica where the Saint’s remains are conserved, is dedicated to him.
The message of love that has its roots in the Saint’s custom of favouring unions among young people, radiates from Terni therefore!
For the entire month of February, a dense programme of cultural and musical events are organised in the city, which reach their climax in the religious celebrations of the 14th February.

Cantamaggio

A city version of the ancient peasant propitiatory rites celebrated with arrival of spring and awakening of nature, during which groups of “Maggiaioli”, that is those who bring in “May” (the branch in blossom), would go from house to house, singing songs for which they received gifts. The tradition regained favour under the Ternano dialectal poet Fulvio Miselli in 1896. The climax of the celebration is the joyful procession of allegorical floats, on various topics, representing the various neighbourhoods of the city and nearby villages, through the city streets.
The Cantamaggio is supported by secondary events, such as exhibitions, concerts, plays, the opening of typical taverns in the so-called “City of May”
