The gorges of the Nera
An appropriately named addition to the Nera Valley, also from an environmental point of view, this portion of the territory which begins at the Terni basin and ends in the san Liberatore Lake, where the Nera merges with the Tiber, is interesting from a landscape, naturalistic and historical point of view (the valley floor road route along the Ortana road is charming). At the southern end of the Gorges there are the remains of an old Roman port which proves the ancient navigability of the Tiber and the Nera.
Grottas which were once inhabited by hermits and the hermitage of San Cassiano (Saint Cassian) towards Narni, complete the historical-medieval atmosphere that permeates the entire valley.
In the gorges, which can also be admired from the historical centre of Narni, there is an interesting variety of birds, even water birds.
